Benjamin Sumner Welles (1892-1961) graduated from Harvard University in 1914 and began his diplomatic career in 1915 as Secretary of the United States Embassy in Tokyo. From 1917 to 1919 he served in a similar post in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, on 30 November 1874. He was educated at Harrow and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst before joining the Army in 1895 and serving in India and Sudan.
